MBSAQIP---Seal Copy

UCSF Medical Center is accredited as a Comprehensive Center for Bariatric Surgery by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), MBSAQIP and ASMBS. This certification attests to UCSF Medical Center's commitment to providing and supporting quality improvement and patient safety efforts for metabolic and bariatric surgery patients, and that it meets the needs of patients by providing multidisciplinary, high-quality, patient-centered care.

Multidisciplinary Team

The UCSF Bariatric Surgery Program is led by a multidisciplinary team of experienced surgeons and gastroenterology faculty supported by an outstanding group of medical professionals that that includes dietitians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and physician assistants.

High Volume Center

Over the past 10 years, UCSF bariatric surgeons have performed more than 2,000 surgical procedures.

Minimally Invasive Approach

The vast majority of bariatric surgeries at UCSF are done laparoscopically. This results in:

  • Substantially reduced post-operative pain
  • Fewer complications and risk of infection
  • A shorter hospital stay
  • Faster return to work and normal activities

Revisional Bariatric Surgery

UCSF bariatric surgeons can also alter or repair an unsuccessful operation performed at another institution. This is called revisional bariatric surgery and is generally more complex with a higher degree of risk than the initial operation. At UCSF, in the hands of skilled and experienced bariatric surgeons, revisional surgery can result in a repair of the earlier surgery with minimal risk.

Key Points

  • UCSF bariatric surgeons perform a high volume of bariatric procedures per year
